Love Difference at the Mediterranean Cultural
Forum: Marseille, 4-5 November 2008
Marseille hosted the Mediterranean
Cultural Forum on November 4-5, one of the events organised by the
French EU Presidency as part of the Year of Euro-Mediterranean Intercultural
Dialogue 2008. It was an opportunity to reaffirm, on the heels of
the foreign ministers' meeting for the Union for the Mediterranean,
the vital importance of culture in the Euro-Mediterranean partnership.
The aim of this event was to provide additional input with new ideas,
proposals and projects for non-government organisations and to bring
their conclusions to decision makers and public and private institutions.
The Forum was based on eight workshops: Memory, History and Heritage;
Image, Audiovisual and Cinema; Written Works, Translation and Libraries;
Artists, Artistic Creation, and Artistic and Cultural Mobility; Religion
and Societies; Modernisation of Societies and Law; Education and University;
Identity, Culture, Values and Visions of the Mediterranean.
Workshop 4, titled “Artists, artistic creations and artistic
and cultural mobility” was composed of debates which confronted
different points of views, such as non-governmental actors but also
experts and policy makers of public and private institutions involved
in the Euro-Mediterranean artistic sphere. The participants addressed
issues and problems encountered through their various artistic experiences,
and expressed the growing success of Euro-Mediterranean and cross-border
cooperation. On the basis of statistical evidence, they raised a number
of issues such as: the status of the artist; re-thinking the idea
of « human mobility »; question the stakes and evolution
of contemporary creation; the context and dimension of all artistic
creations has profoundly changed. Michelangelo Pistoletto and Emanuela
Baldi brought the experience of Cittadellarte and Love Difference
to the workshop.
