"Un record per Pellestrina":
on Saturday 16 June final presentation on the island of Pellestrina
On Saturday, the 16th of June the inhabitants of the island
of Pellestrina will present the final result of a two-years team-work
project: a work between needles and threads, from which a reflection
has started over the concepts of community, social transformation,
and dialogue with the others. The results is the longest pillow lace
of the world (actually 435 meters long) made by different hands, united
in one work to represent the island’s culture, identity and
heritage.
The presentation event will take place in front of Sant’Antonio
church, in Pellestrina; it will start at 4:30 pm with an exchange
and demonstration of the pillow lace technique with lace-makers from
Pellestrina and from Arenys de Munt; at 6:00 official presentation
of the project with artists and authorities. The official Press Conference
is planned for Monday June 11th, 1:00 pm, in Cà Farsetti.
The project “A record for Pellestrina” has been developed
by the artists Lisa Castellani, Enrica Cavarzan, Maria Zanchi, Gloria
Safont-Tria together with Love Difference and Cittadellarte - Fondazione
Pistoletto, working on the idea of “community based art project”:
building better relations within the Pellestrina community and assuring
the preservation of the cultural and natural heritage of the island,
a very fragile ecosystem in the Venice lagoon. The artistic performance
links back to an ancient hand-crafting tradition, the pillow lace
made with the “tombolo”; the artists aimed to build up
a dialogue with the social system, to make the island rethink its
role for the future, and to document the project’s process and
its creative strategies. The project involved not only the most expert
lace-makers, but the whole population of the island,and groups from
Italy and abroad. The project “A record for Pellestrina”
started in summer 2005, when Cittadellarte and Love Difference took
part in the 51st International Exposure of Art, the Venice Biennial;
it's supported by the local institutions and sponsored by Vimar1991
and Lanificio Guabello SPA.
