Closer Look: a grants scheme for young journalists from Eastern, Central and South Eastern Europe. Deadline: 31 October
Closer Look is a travel grant scheme of the European Cultural Foundation supporting Eastern, Central and South East European young journalists in conducting investigative journalism on culturally relevant topics.
The journalist should be under 35 years of age and from one of the following countries: Albania, Bulgaria, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia and Turkey. Individual young journalists should apply in conjunction with the editors-in-chief or section editors of weeklies or weekly supplements. Editors must provide a written statement indicating that they are willing to publish the article (or series of articles) by the young journalist in question. The project proposal must contain the following items: clearly formulated topic(s) and/or question(s) for investigation; relevance of these topics/questions within the European context; list of places and people to be visited/researched during the project; the preferred timeline of the travel/research; the preferred local partners/hosts (newspapers, agencies, institution) where the research will take place; preliminary budget for the overall realization of the project including the financial contribution of the newspaper.
The first deadline (end May) resulted in grants for five journalists. The maximum size of a grant is EUR 2.500. The second deadline for applications is October 31 2005.
