The Mediterranean Social Forum
in Barcelona, 16-19 June: 280 events to promote a public space for
communication within the Mediterranean coasts
The Mediterranean Social Forum opens today
(June 16) in Barcelona. The Spanish city will hosts some 280 events,
including conferences, seminars, workshops, not necessarily devoted
to political issues. Since its creation the Forum has opened up new
horizons of discussion, bringing in its agenda issues such as education,
arts, use and diffusion of technologies. The attention for the manifold
peculiarities of a social contest, and the importance of every single
step of a responsible transformation are increasing. It is not only
about activism, but also about confrontation in the field of identity,
and how to preserve differences while fostering development. The discussion
will thus include the linguistic issue (note the conference organised
by Libero por la Limgvoj - Libertè pour les langues, featuring
François Simonnet). Barcelona will host a number of art events,
many of which are directly linked to the activity of Love Difference:
a conference on equal and joint North-South exchange in African art
(Organised by AfricArts, featuring Dounia Benqassem), a meeting on
art as means for social transformation (organised by Cooperativa d'Iniciativa
Social Doble Via), or Transcultural dialogue. Immigrants and refugees
in the Mediterranean Art. together with these events, many others
will deal issues such as human rights, conflicts, ecology (focusing
on the water problem), food, health, trading.
