Inheritance rights for women: a long way for Middle East and North Africa Countries
Women across the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region are focusing on inheritance rights, struggling for their enforcement and for having an equal male-female division recognized. Press agencies and media have published about the workshop, held in Amman, on 14-16 of February, in which experts from Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Iran, Kuwait, Palestine, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco stressed problems and approaches in each of these countries. Discussions did not concern mere economical issues, but also civil and human rights, such as the citizenship: in Jordan, where a growing number of women are coerced into giving up their shares of inheritance to male relatives, those married to foreigners cannot transfer their own citizenship to their children.
Many countries in the region are still working on basic rights awareness campaigns. Data gathered from this session and fact-finding missions will provide material for a book on women inheritance and housing rights in the Mena region.
